In this book by Gibson, set in Tokyo and San Francisco, several characters from the previous two novels (Virtual Light and Idoru) return, such as Laney, Rydell, Chevette, the idoru herself, and so forth. This time there is a change coming, and some like Laney can sense it, and others want to take advantage of what is going to happen. The action shifts back and forth between Tokyo and San Francisco, with the conclusion happening mostly on the bridge in San Francisco.
