As in most of L'Amour's books there is a strong central character in the form of Jean LaBarge, a frontiersman from Pennsylvania, that is able to fight off all comers and achieve his goal of fur trading in Alaska despite many hardships and adversity. There is also a love interest in the form of a Russian princess whose husband is the Czar's representative in Sitka, the early capital of Russian America. Subtly, in the background is LaBarge's long time friend Robert J. Walker, an historical figure who did play prominently in the actual acquisition of the Alaska Territory from Russia. L'Amour gives knowledgeable descriptions of Sitka, and the regions of the Alexander Archipelago with its many fjords, coves and channels as LaBarge tries to avoid capture from his Russian nemesis. L'Amour gives his readers the flavor of the bawdy life of San Francisco, the high society life of St. Petersburg, Russia, the wild ness of both Siberia and Alaska and the stuffiness of Washington, DC in the telling of his story about one man's Alaskan dream.
