A police procedural set in Montreal during the winter. Both the city and the elements influence the action as Sergent-Detective Emil Cinq-Mars, an aging Francophone Roman Catholic, investigates along with this young English-speaking partner Bill Mathers. Morally complex, layered by Quebec language tensions, biker gangs, organized crime, and snow. Followed years later by Ice Lake (2001). A very strong sense of place makes it memorable.
