Protecting your skin from the harmful rays of the sun is the best way to maintain healthy skin. According to the leading dermatologist with an international reputation most of the changes seen in the aging of your skin is caused by a lifetime exposure to the sun.
According to Dr. Ken Landow, to receive the maximum protection from the sun the following three methods are a must.
Use a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) that is higher than 15. Apply the sunscreen 20 minutes before you go outdoors and then reapply every two hours. If you sweet a lot or are in the water you will need to apply your sunscreen more frequently.
Limit the time you will be spending outside in the sun. Try to avoid the sun during high intensity hours. If you are in the sun between 10am and 4pm this is when the sun is most damaging.
Wearing protective clothing is a great way to reduce the amount of sun your skin will receive. Many clothes now have a SPF in them to further protect from the suns rays. They are a little more expensive but well worth it. Wearing long pants or trousers, long sleeved shirts and a hat with a brim will help with sun exposure. Fabric that has a tighter weave will offer better protection than fabric that is loosely woven.
If you do go outdoors and do not protect yourself from the harmful rays of the sun over time your skin will be affected by the increase in UV exposure
